Connecting your own Proxmox VE to the Managed Proxmox Backup Server

If you run your own Proxmox VE, add your Managed Proxmox Backup Server there as a storage. After that, all the usual PVE functions are available — only with the storage on our side.

Requirements

• A static public IP address, recorded when you placed your order.
• Outbound TCP port 8007. An inbound rule is not needed — your Proxmox VE opens the connection.
• The Connection information.

Creating the storage

1. Datacenter → Storage → Add → Proxmox Backup Server.
2. Fill in the fields:

   Field in Proxmox VE	Value
   ID	Freely chosen, e.g. managed-backup
   Server	Hostname
   Username	Username, in full including @pbs!mydc
   Password	Password
   Datastore	MPBS_<service ID>
   Fingerprint	Fingerprint

3. Confirm with Add.

If the storage appears as active with a size, the connection is complete. If it stays inactive, check the outbound port rule and whether the public address of your Proxmox VE is the one recorded with us.

It also works on the command line:

--password without a value prompts for the password interactively.

Optional: encrypting backups

Proxmox VE can encrypt backups before they are transferred: Datacenter → Storage → your backup storage → Encryption tab. Have a key generated and download the key file.

First backup

Select a VM or container, Backup → Backup now, and choose your new entry as the Storage. For ongoing operation, create a scheduled job under Datacenter → Backup. The backups then appear in the Client Area under Content.

Without Proxmox VE, you can store file backups directly with the proxmox-backup-client; the credentials are the same.
