What is Managed Backup Storage?
Managed Backup Storage is a mountable, ZFS-based backup storage that we operate. You book capacity, we provision the storage fully automatically — reachable exclusively over the private network (VXLAN) of your cloud services. There is deliberately no public internet access; that protects your backups.
Requirements
You can use the service only in combination with an active cloud computing service (Platform Vienna or Server Vienna), because access runs over that service's private network.
Supported protocols
You enable the access protocols you need yourself in the client area:
- NFS (TCP 2049) — mount on Linux
- SMB3 (TCP 445) — Windows, Linux, macOS; encrypted
- SFTP (TCP 22) — file transfer, also for restic
- SSH (TCP 22) — restricted shell inside your storage area
- rsync (TCP 2222)
- Borg (TCP 2222) — including append-only mode (ransomware protection)
Finding your credentials
You will find all connection details — your IP address(es) in the private network, the username (u<service ID>) and ready-made commands for each protocol — in the client area under Services → your Backup Storage. There you switch protocols on and off, store SSH keys and set the SMB password.
Capacity
The capacity you have booked is a hard limit. You can see your current usage in the client area at any time; upgrades and downgrades are possible there (see the separate article “Capacity, usage and upgrade/downgrade”).
