With ransomware protection, an immutable snapshot — a frozen state — of your Managed Backup Storage is created every day. If files are deleted by mistake or encrypted by malware, you can get the old state back yourself.

Booking ransomware protection

Ransomware protection is an add-on and is billed per booked TB. You book it when you order, under Additional Services. Whether it is active for your service is shown in the top section of the management page: next to Snapshot-Schutz (snapshot protection) it says aktiv (active), otherwise nicht gebucht (not booked).

Without ransomware protection there are no snapshots. Deleted or encrypted data cannot be restored then — not even by us.

What the protection does

  • A snapshot of your storage is created automatically every day.
  • The snapshots of the last 3 days are kept; older ones are removed automatically.
  • A snapshot cannot be changed — not even by malware that has taken over your machine.
  • The management page shows the space the snapshots take up separately, as Snapshot-Belegung (snapshot usage).

Recovering individual files yourself

The snapshots are in a hidden, read-only folder .zfs in your storage. Open the state you want and copy the files back:

  • SMB: in the share under .zfs\snapshot\<snapshot>\
  • SFTP or SSH: under /home/.zfs/snapshot/<snapshot>/

<snapshot> stands for the name of a snapshot as listed in the Snapshots section.

Over NFS the .zfs folder is not visible for technical reasons. Use SMB or SFTP instead — or provide the snapshot (next section).

Providing a snapshot

The Snapshots section lists all existing snapshots with their creation time and size.

  1. In the row of the snapshot you want, click bereitstellen (provide).
  2. The snapshot appears as a read-only copy in the .restore/<snapshot> folder of your storage — over all services, NFS included.
  3. Copy back the files you need.

Your current data stays unchanged. This is the safe way.

Resetting the whole storage (rollback)

Warning: a rollback resets the entire storage to an earlier snapshot. All data added since then and all newer snapshots are irrevocably lost. If you only need individual files, provide the snapshot instead.

For safety, a rollback is confirmed twice:

  1. At the bottom of the Snapshots section, select the snapshot.
  2. Type the word ROLLBACK into the field next to it.
  3. Click Rollback anfordern (request rollback) and confirm the prompt.
  4. You receive an email with a confirmation link. The rollback is only carried out once you open that link. The link is valid for a limited time only.

If it does not work

„Snapshot-Schutz ist für diesen Dienst nicht gebucht.“ (snapshot protection is not booked for this service)
No ransomware protection is active for your service. There are no snapshots then.
„Bitte zur Bestätigung ROLLBACK eintippen.“ (please type ROLLBACK to confirm)
The confirmation word is missing or misspelled. Type ROLLBACK in capital letters.
„Der Bestätigungslink ist abgelaufen — bitte erneut anfordern.“ (the confirmation link has expired — please request it again)
Request the rollback again and open the new link promptly.
