Managed Backup Storage is backup storage for your Private Cloud. Your virtual machines write their backups to it — via NFS, SMB, SFTP, rsync or Borg. The storage can be reached only through the private network of your Cloud product, not over the internet. This protects your backups.

Requirement

Managed Backup Storage is only available together with the Private Cloud Computing – Platform Vienna product. The storage is connected to one of the private networks of that product. It cannot be used with the Server Vienna product alone.

What you get

  • Storage from 1 to 50 TB, which you can change at any time later.
  • These access methods, which you switch on and off individually:
    ServicePortTypical use
NFSTCP 2049mount as a drive on Linux
SMB (version 3, encrypted)TCP 445network drive on Windows, Linux or macOS
SFTPTCP 22transfer files, also for restic
SSHTCP 22restricted command line in your storage
    rsyncTCP 2222synchronize folders
BorgTCP 2222backups with Borg, also in “append only” mode
  • As an optional add-on, ransomware protection: daily, immutable snapshots of your storage.

Note: The management page of Managed Backup Storage is currently only available in German. This article quotes the German labels and gives their meaning in brackets.

Where you manage the service

My Products & Services → your Managed Backup Storage. The page is divided into sections:

Managed Backup Storage
How much of your storage is in use, and whether Snapshot-Schutz (snapshot protection, that is, ransomware protection) is booked.
Anbindungen (connections)
In which of your private networks the storage can be reached, with its IP address.
Dienste (services)
Switch the access methods on and off, set the SMB password.
Zugangsdaten (credentials)
User name and ready-made commands for every service that is switched on. Appears as soon as there is a connection.
SSH-Schlüssel (SSH keys)
Keys for SFTP, SSH, rsync and Borg.
Snapshots
Only with ransomware protection: provide or roll back to earlier states.

First steps

  1. Add a connection: in the Anbindungen section, select one of your private networks. Leave the field IP (leer = automatisch) (IP, empty = automatic) empty so that a free address is assigned, or enter a free address from the network. The MTU usually stays at 1500. Click Hinzufügen (add).
  2. Switch on services: in the Dienste section, click aktivieren (activate) next to each access method you need.
  3. Set up access: for SMB, set a password with at least 12 characters. For SFTP, SSH, rsync and Borg, add an SSH key.
  4. Connect: the Zugangsdaten section shows the ready-made commands — see Connecting.
