A few things we deliberately manage for you; others are limited by your plan. This article explains what that means in day-to-day use — and what to do when a change does not seem to take effect.
What we manage for you
- Zone header (SOA)
- Contains the serial number that the coordination between our name servers depends on. It is updated automatically with every change.
- Name servers of your domain
- This is the delegation itself. If you changed it here, the domain would be unreachable from one moment to the next.
Both appear in the list with a padlock icon — you can see them, but you cannot change them. That is intentional: a zone without a visible zone header looks broken even though it is not.
Limits of your plan
- Number of records
- The Information page shows at the top how many are in use and how many are still available.
- Time to live (TTL)
- A minimum and a maximum value. Very small values generate a great many queries; very large ones keep changes invisible for days.
- Changes in the last hour
- Protects the name servers from scripts that write every second. It applies to the user interface and to the API alike.
- Record types
- Which types you can choose from depends on your plan.
If you need more, get in touch with us — that can be adjusted without you having to create your records again.
My change has no effect — what's wrong?
| Check … | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Does the domain point to our name servers? | The most common reason. The Information page shows under Name servers what is on record for the zone. If that differs, your change is saved but not served. See Overview and first steps. |
| How long is the TTL? | Other servers are allowed to keep the old answer for that long. With 24 hours it simply takes up to 24 hours. If you are planning a switch, lower the value a few days beforehand. |
| Is the record really in the list? | The list may be filtered. Clear the search field and set the type filter to All types. |
| Is the name correct? | @ stands for the domain itself. www gives www.your-domain — a www.your-domain entered by mistake, on the other hand, gives www.your-domain.your-domain. |
| Is there a CNAME there? | No other records are allowed for the same name alongside a CNAME. At the zone apex (@), a CNAME is not permitted at all. |
When the service is suspended
If your service is suspended, for example because of an unpaid invoice, your records stay active — your website and your email keep working. Only changes are not possible while that lasts.
When you cancel
After a cancellation the zone remains in place for the time being and is not deleted right away. If you want to keep using your records, fetch them from the list or through the API beforehand — see Automation via the API.
