Answers to the questions we are asked most often about the Managed Proxmox Backup Server.

Everything under “Management” is empty

The management pages show content only for an active service. If the service is suspended or cancelled, they stay empty. Your data is not deleted during a suspension.

I have deleted backups, but the usage is not going down

Deleting only removes the reference at first. Only the daily Garbage Collection frees the chunks — see Retention-Settings.

My storage is filling up

  1. Under Retention-Settings, check whether a keep level is still set. An empty field or a 0 switches the level off.
  2. Under Content, check how many backups are marked as protected — those are never removed automatically.
  3. Increase the capacity via Actions → Upgrade/Downgrade Options.

Who can access my backups?

Access requires valid credentials and a connection from one of the public IP addresses on record. Your access user has rights only on your own datastore. If your address changes, get in touch with us.

Are my backups encrypted?

Only if you have enabled encryption on the system that creates the backups — it is an option, not a default. The Encrypted column under Content shows whether an individual backup is encrypted. Setting it up: Connecting your own Proxmox VE.

I have lost my encryption key

Then the backups encrypted with it can no longer be read. We do not hold a copy. Create a new key in Proxmox VE, keep it separate from the server and start a new series of backups.

Can I retrieve individual files from a backup?

Not through the Client Area. Add the datastore to your own Proxmox VE and use the file restore there.

What happens to my data when I cancel?

When the service ends, the datastore is removed. Retrieve what you want to keep beforehand — for example with a sync job in the push direction, see Locations and Sync Jobs.
